From the Editor: May in the East

People often ask us why we started Local East. Isn’t print media dead or dying, they ask (repeatedly).
It’s not an easy question to answer, but a large part of it was a belief in the power of local stories. While it is true that we all look outward in this fast-paced global world, our images brought to us by Instagram, our TV by Netflix, we still collectively have a desire to know about the people, the places, the restaurants, the cafes, the shops and the experiences of life, right here where we live.
So I am proud to bring you so many wonderfully told local stories, rolling out this month on this site and found in our hard copy of this month’s Local East (view the copy here).
My friend and colleague Kerry Parnell has written with exquisite poignancy about love, loss and motherhood in her piece, Love of Ages, timed for Mother’s Day,. Sheree Mutton tells the story of Woollahra’s Giuliana De Felice, who has launched her own international-standard travel-focused beauty brand after a five-year development slog. Jessica Ridley considers how our local pubs are changing — for the better — thanks to an influx of female patrons. And we take an in-depth look at the incredible rise of luxury retail, an industry now worth $2.1 billion annually in Australia. There is certainly luxury aplenty here in the East, with the exquisite new luxury precinct at Westfield Bondi Junction.
It’s also hard to miss that the federal election is taking place on May 18. We asked the major players in our seat of Wentworth to share with us their vision for this electorate and their answers will be illuminating. For the record, we asked Labor’s Tim Murray to participate in our story but he did not reply to our numerous phone calls and emails, so we won’t know what he stands for. Good luck to all the political aspirants. It will be very interesting to see how Wentworth votes and we will be talking to the newly elected member about their vision for our neighbourhood after the election.
Finally, don’t miss your chance to win a $500 shopping voucher at Westfield Bondi Junction. Check our instagram account before May 10 to enter and good luck.
