Runway ready: The Travelista is here to save your dry skin woes
An Eastern Suburbs local has spent five years developing a travel-specific skincare range, writes Sheree Mutton
Coming off a long-haul flight to Italy, Giuliana DeFelice was distressed to look at her skin in the mirror.
“My skin was parched, sluggish and really sallow,” says Woollahra-based DeFelice. “I actually looked more ready for a night in quarantine than for an exciting European adventure.
“I learnt that I was not alone. Intense dehydration, dull, flaky and tight skin are common concerns amongst frequent travellers. When I began to research the effects of flying on the skin, I discovered that the low relative humidity onboard a plane was up to five times drier than that in the desert.”
The revelation put DeFelice on an epic five-year journey to create, produce, test and launch her luxury skincare brand, The Travelista. The range launched last month and is available online.
The Travelista is specifically aimed at nourishing and protecting the skin onboard lengthy plane trips and features Rose Otto Moisture Mist, Jetset Antioxidant Boost, Omega+ Facial Oil, Conditioning Lip Balm, Micellar Mist Makeup Remover, Nourishing Body Wash and a Nutrient Rich Body Balm. The range is luxurious and ultra hydrating and complemented by gorgeous Italian-themed packaging.
“The range was born out of necessity with a sole purpose to deliver that extra hydration needed to keep your skin healthy and radiant while you’re away,” DeFelice says.
For knowledge of botanicals and their moisturising properties, DeFelice — who has Italian heritage and lives part of the year in Italy, where she is restoring an ancient chapel — turned to an expert next door to her Italian pad.
“I was privileged to gain access to an incredible knowledge bank of botanicals and their healing properties from the botanical expert and keeper of the medicinal library at the monastery next door to us in Tuscany,” she says.
She also visited fragrance’s spiritual home of Grasse in France to learn about the Damascan rose and the deep hydrating and skin softening benefits of rose otto. Then back in Sydney, with her notebook in hand, she began developing a line of products, and The Travelista brand was born.
“Whether you’re heading to the sun, the snow, the city, for work or pleasure, our mission is to maintain the integrity of your skin, restore your healthy glow and nourish the adventure,” she says.
The result of the long and gruelling development phase resulted in products containing botanical oils and antioxidant ingredients and mimic the natural sebum in the skin to hydrate the skin beyond the epidermis (the top layer of the skin). They are also free of parabens, silicones and artificial colours and fragrances.
DeFelice says her goal was to create a line of “effortless beauty travel” products that earned their place in the essential travel kit.
“The secret to maintaining optimum skin health lies is maintaining hydration,” she says. “I want to hit the ground running, feeling amazing.”
DeFelice’s top skincare travel tips
Conditioning lips in-flight can help save from airborne localised infection because cracked, damaged skin is more susceptible to bacteria. And remember, avoid licking lips as water evaporates and can cause cracking.
Remove all makeup before you fly. If you can, leave home without it, if not, remove it as soon as you’re onboard. Makeup can clog and irritate stressed skin in transit.
Start your in-transit skincare routine with a hydrating spray. It will also optimise all other products you use, helping them absorb more readily and efficiently into the skin.
